Jalapeno Fajitas? Prepare to Evacuate!

Jalapeno Fajitas? Prepare to Evacuate!
Jalapeno Fajitas?  Prepare to Evacuate! The love of my life and I were camping at Conchas Lake New Mexico with our friends Randy & Leslie in our 5th wheel RVs.  On this particular night we decided not to cook, which is rare, because all four of us are excellent cooks, and we love to perform our skills in the kitchen or galley. We mentioned to our friends that the Ramada Inn in Tucumcari made outstanding Fajitas, and we convinced them to go with us and make the short drive into to...

Our Favorite RV and Boating Jokes

Our Favorite RV and Boating Jokes
April is National Humor Month, so we are going to share some of our favorite jokes pertaining to RV living and travel or boating funnies.  If you have a favorite joke, share it with us!     An RVer in a motorhome got hopelessly bogged down in an unexpected muddy hole along a dirt road. After a few minutes, a passing farmer drove by on his tractor and offered to pull him out for only $20. After the motorhome was back on dry ground, the RVer said to the farmer, "At those prices, ...

Don't Always Doubt the Weather Forecast

Don't Always Doubt the Weather Forecast
One of our favorite times to camp and fish at Elephant Butte Lake is the early part of October.  Up until about the middle of the month you can still enjoy warm days (unless there’s an early cold snap) and swim in water that’s still an enjoyable temperature.   Plus, most of the crowds have gone and it's very peaceful and quiet. A few years ago we planned a trip months in advance with our good friends Oscar and Juanita who live in Farmington for the first weekend in Oct...

Close Encounter of a Bird Kind

Close Encounter of a Bird Kind
My Wife and I were traveling from Chicago to Albuquerque via old Route 66 in our 2003 Monaco Dynasty.  On the way we stopped in for a visit at an old friends home in Springfield, Missouri.  Bill & Dee were also big time “birders” and had been feeding hundreds of songbirds in their back yard from several feeders.  As we were having breakfast on the first morning of our visit we heard a loud thump on their kitchen window.  It’s not uncommon for birds to ...

Botanical Gardens and Beans Don't Mix

Botanical Gardens and Beans Don't Mix
My husband Jack loves beans of every kind, well except for Lima beans, which I love!  When we are on the road in our Monaco Vesta motor home I will cook a pot of beans about every week and bake New Mexican cornbread to go with them. One week we were traveling through Missouri and decided to make a stop to see the St. Louis Botanical Gardens. One of our guide books gave it a high recommendation.  We lucked out and got a space at the St. Louis RV Park for two nights.  It&rsq...

Crashing and Thrashing - Elk vs. Coyotes

Crashing and Thrashing - Elk vs. Coyotes
Navajo Lake is one of the most beautiful lakes in New Mexico, but the water temperature is pretty cold until late August, even after its had a chance to warm up all summer. Despite the cooler water, we usually go camping at Navajo a couple of times a year in our Big Horn 5th wheel and fish off of our Suntracker pontoon boat for bass & catfish.  The hook-ups at the Juniper Loop and Cedar Loop RV campground are very nice, and the views of the lake are spectacular! A couple of years ago ...

Burro Mountain RV Park was Wonderful!

Burro Mountain RV Park was Wonderful!
One of my “Bucket List” destinations was to explore the Gila Cliff Dwellings.  They always held a fascination for me since I was a little girl and I finally convinced my husband that we should visit there in our Minnie Winnie.  I read the article about Burro Mountain RV Park in your newsletter article about Silver City and we decided to stay there.  The combo of ancient ruins and a funky town with art galleries and restaurants sounded perfect to me – and it was!&...

Palo Duro Canyon in a Pop-Up Camper!

Palo Duro Canyon in a Pop-Up Camper!
We read the article in one of your “Good Times” newsletters about Palo Duro Canyon in the Texas Panhandle and decided to hook up our Palomino pop-up trailer and do some camping there.  Wow, what a treat! We had no idea that this very unusual area of Texas existed so close to Albuquerque.  We found clean restrooms, showers, hiking trails and some super areas for wildlife viewing as well as scenic overlooks.      ...

Canyon Thunder

Canyon Thunder
Canyon Thunder My husband and I really enjoy going camping in our Sunset Trail travel trailer that we bought from you guys last year.  Our Pug Winston likes it too!  Actually, he thinks it’s his!  lol This spring we were camping in the Big Thompson canyon near Colorado Springs.  It was a super time mostly because it was during the week and we almost had the entire canyon to ourselves. Frank and I are in real estate sales, so we work the weekends and take off on Tuesda...

My Tracker Bass Boat is Gone!!

My Tracker Bass Boat is Gone!!
In a previous story I told you about buying my husband a Tracker bass boat for our 7th wedding anniversary.  One of our first trips with the new Tracker bass boat was to Elephant Butte lake for a special get together with friends that we called the Summer Blow Out.  It usually took place Labor Day weekend and involved all of our friends that wanted to participate.  Most years there were at least 10 to 12 friends who came together for a weekend of camping and fun on the water. I...

The Seven Year Itch - Scratched with a New Tracker Boat

The Seven Year Itch - Scratched with a New Tracker Boat
For our 7th Wedding Anniversary, I decided to do something wild and crazy and bought my husband a brand new Tracker bass boat.  It had to do with the “Seven Year Itch” superstition in a marriage and I thought I’d give him something to scratch the itch with!  However,  I wanted it to be a surprise for him (I love surprising him!) and it took some extra thought and planning but I pulled it off flawlessly. I enlisted the help of my father in buying the Tracker bass...

Families that Camp Together, Stay Together

Families that Camp Together, Stay Together
It was dark and I was lying on the boat dock looking up at the stars.  I remember thinking how much brighter they were out here compared to the city. Just as that thought crossed my mind I heard the ringing of the little bell that was attached to the end of my fishing pole. My first look was to the end of my pole, my second look was at my Dad, he heard it too and told me to grab my pole and see if the fish was still there. As I pulled on the pole I felt life, so I did like I was taught and ...
