Nestled in the foothills of the San Bernardino Mountains is the Gate City: San Bernardino, California. San Bernardino is the link between the coast and the high desert via the Cajon Pass and is referred to as the Inland Valley. Whether you’re looking for the old Route 66, wineries, mountain resorts, apple orchards, historic theatres, the solitude of the desert or the scenic drive to ocean beaches, make San Bernardino your base for exploring all of these.

In 1926, Route 66 was completed through San Bernardino and the town quickly responded with motels, gas stations and other services for the many travelers, several of which can still be seen today. |
There were two alignments of the Mother Road through San Bernardino, the latter one now called Business 66. Here you can see the first McDonalds Restaurant, which now houses the McDonalds Route 66 Museum at 14th and E Streets. Also along this route is the California Theatre of Performing Arts, a landmark since 1928, and the place of Will Rogers’s last performance. The theatre now displays a mural of Mr. Rogers. |
 |
Along the older alignment, several motels and cafes can be found tucked between the newer buildings, one of which is the Mitla Café at 602 N. Mt. Vernon Avenue. Established in 1937, this historic restaurant is a family owned business that’s been serving up great Mexican cuisine since the early days of Route 66.

One of the most famous attractions in the Inland Valley is the Arrowhead, a natural landmark easily seen near the base of the San Bernardino Mountains. The Arrowhead is 1,115 feet in length and 396 feet in width. Though the outline is so perfect it may appear to be man-made or artificial, the phenomenon is, in fact, natural. |
Many legends exist about the Arrowhead. The most ancient legend, perhaps, is one handed down from the Indians. The story goes that the Great Spirit had an arrow, which, like the Israelite’s Pillar of File, was to guide them to the spot where they were to live. The Great Spirit having selected their place, fixed the arrow to mark it forever.
A major event in San Bernardino is the Annual Route 66 Rendezvous. The event brings together car buffs from all over the country. Route 66 Rendezvous is a 4-day and 3-night cruisin’ classic car show that encompasses 35-blocks of downtown. Open to vehicles from 1900-1974, classics, muscle cars, hot rods, and trucks cruise the historic streets of San Bernardino.
