Backing Up Tips

Backing Up Tips

When I was younger and traveling with my parents in their RV to camp and fish, I was always mortified and embarrassed when it came time for Mom to back the RV down the boat ramp to launch the boat in the water.  My father would yell at her constantly.  It was difficult backing the RV down a ramp.

Apparently they never had a clear set of signals worked out for the situation.

That’s one of the keys to backing a RV easily.  Here are some other tips and suggestions:

Go slow and be cautious.

Both the driver and the spotter should walk the area before backing in.  Identify any potential hazards such as boulders, low hanging branches, picnic tables or ramp problems.

To avoid confusion (and keep down the yelling!) your signals need to be clear.  The basic signals you need are stop, left, right, straight back and distance. Make sure that you both understand that right or left means the way the trailer should go and not the way the steering wheel should turn.

The driver needs to decide if they want the spotter up front or in back of the rig.   The spotter should be visible to the driver but out of the vehicle’s path.  Stop backing if you cannot see your spotter.

The driver must turn off the radio and roll down the window.

If you’re baking into a site, decide where you want the rig to be parked.  Carry some small orange traffic cones and put them where you want the back of the trailer to stop.

Have enough sense to know when your RV won’t fit somewhere – before you cause damage.

The closer you are to disaster the more likely your spotter is going to forget the signals and begin waving frantically – or yelling!  If you do not understand a hand signal ,STOP!

Take your time.  Get out and look if you're not sure.

And, finally, if you don't think you can back into a site, don't.  Ask for another site that's easier or even go on to another park.  RVing is supposed to be a pleasant experience.

As in all things, the more you practice the better you will get and the easier it will become.

A very handy tip for backing anything up is to put your hand on the bottom of the steering wheel. When you want the trailer to move to the left, move your hand to left. Obviously, it would be the same if need to go to the right. This helped me immensely.

Thanks for a great suggestion on placing your hands at the bottom of the steering wheel. It works well!
