We read the article in one of your “Good Times” newsletters about Palo Duro Canyon in the Texas Panhandle and decided to hook up our Palomino pop-up trailer and do some camping there. Wow, what a treat!
We had no idea that this very unusual area of Texas existed so close to Albuquerque. We found clean restrooms, showers, hiking trails and some super areas for wildlife viewing as well as scenic overlooks. They had several campsites so we decided to camp at 2 while we were there. The first night we camped at the south end of the park in the Mesquite Camping area and we hiked the Juniper Trail which is a 6 mile hike round trip. Then we folded up our Palomino and headed to the north end of the park to the Sagebrush Camping sites for the last 2 nights.
The visitors center is near there as well as the trading post where we purchased a couple of gifts for some friends. We were surprised to find out that they also had cabins for rent, but we love the portability of our Palomino camping trailer.
There is so much to do at Palo Duro we plan to go again during the fall when the colors change so we can get some more pictures.
The only downside to visiting there is that there is a rule that you may not publicly display an open container with alcohol in it. But there is plenty of room in our Palomino to consume a beer or glass of wine without being on “public display”
Thanks for the article in your newsletter. We are very glad we signed up to receive it.
Happy Camping,
